Explaining the Character Sheet

Who wants to spend an hour making a new character from scratch? I do.

Thought I’d talk about our basic character sheet over on the downloads page.

The top left quadrant (Q1) is where the character’s basic skills are tracked. The top boxes are meant to record the number of dice you would roll for each skill. The smaller boxes below track where your character’s skill growth and are changed as your character develops if you choose to spend your Rep points here.

The top right quadrant (Q2) contains several different areas. The first portion is an area that holds additional stats for the character that also affect gameplay. All characters will have a Move and Size stat. The other stats of Armor, Mass, Splice, Cyber, and Systems relate to the character’s equipment. There seems like a lot here, but a simple character would use only one of these stats, while a more complicated one may use up to 3. It’s theoretically possible to have all 5 given the current rules. I don’t think that would be a great build in practice.

The next portion of the top right quadrant (still Q2) contains the BHP, AHP, and Power stats for the character. Bio HP is the amount of damage your character’s flesh and bones can sustain while still being functional. Armor HP is the amount of damage your character’s armor can sustain while still providing adequate protection to the squishy bits below. Power is the amount of energy available in sufficient amounts to power weapons and other advanced tech. The squares here are designed such that you shade in the outer box to show the max / fully rested values. The inner box is marked to show the current value. It’s optional to use this pen and paper method. I generally use tracking tokens or dice to monitor the current levels. When a character takes damage, they generally receive AHP damage first, then BHP. Once BHP runs out they are incapacitated and out for the remainder of the scenario. Also, possibly dead or disfigured.

The final portions of the top right quadrant (Q2 again) are for your fate dice and rerolls. The Squad Leaders in the game all have a limited ability to modify dice or reroll dice. This is noted here.

The middle section of the character sheet holds the character’s active inventory. This includes weapons in the character’s hands and items like medkits or grenades that are stuffed in the character’s backpack.

The bottom left quadrant (Q3) is to track the character’s individual skills. The number of skills a character has is generally dictated by the Knowledge trait. Besides general subject knowledge, each skill also provides a separate benefit at levels 1, 3, and 5. Some of the skill benefits affect the character build. All of the ones that can be activated during the game will have a printable card to make tracking their usage easier.

The bottom right quadrant (Q4) contains other character information. Generally this should include cybernetic or genetic modifications, armor, weapons left on the ship during missions, the description of skills (if desired), and any other information relating to the player.
