I thought I’d talk a little about Character Generation.
Dark Metal comes with at least 8 pre-generated characters and their squads, and a full character generation system. I’ll put up one of the 8 pre-gen characters in a future post and run through an example of what each comes with.
Character Generation in Dark Metal is done using an open ended, points buy system that is similar to many traditional RPG systems. There are no defined classes. There are three major build types: cybernetics, gene splicing, and armor. They can be mixed to some degree, but for the most part you should anticipate picking one and sticking to it.
Characters purchase equipment, mods, and traits to build their character. The different categories of equipment and mods are Armor, Splices, Cybernetics, Items, Weapons, and Attachment Point Weapons. I’ve named them collectively as ‘MES’. As an example, this is the current Cyber Table:
Many of these can be matched to physical attributes of your chosen mini. For instance, this mini, from Heresy Labs:
Can be paper equipped with an Energy Melee Weapon, Powered Armor, and a Heavy Pistol to match the appearance of the mini. The cards for the two weapons are below:
There are 6 traits in Dark Metal, and they are Athletics, Precision, Instinct, Awareness, Knowledge, and Communications. Briefly, they are useful for the following:
- Athletics – Close combat skill
- Precision – Ranged combat skill
- Instinct – Not getting hit
- Awareness – Seeing things (traps, small enemies, other things in the surrounding environment)
- Knowledge – Skills and their miscellaneous effects
- Communications – Leadership skills related to your Allies
