I thought it’d be neat to run through how I might look at a mini and create a character around that.
So let’s take the below model:
A few major equipment pieces jump out immediately. The armor, the sword, and the wrist weapon. These are the easiest. The armor fits well with how Power Armor works in the game. This sets our build type.
The wrist weapon can be viewed as a pistol for gameplay purposes as it is functionally the same. As of this writing, there are two types of pistols in the weapon selection table, the heavy and the machine pistols. The heavy pistol has piercing for armored opponents. The machine pistol has better accuracy. Since I’m envisioning this character fighting other armored opponents, I’m going to pick the heavy pistol. Note that while Power Armor allows for two Attach Point class weapons in this game, you’re not obligated to fill both of them.
Building a melee focused armor character is purposefully a bit difficult in this game. Luckily, the PW A-Melee makes up for this a bit with higher than normal damage output and the ability to hit up to two opponents with one swing. Also, by using 1 Power, the character’s melee attack gains 1 Pierce, 1 Shock, and 1 to their Athletic dice pool for the next Close Combat attack. Power Armor comes with enough power to allow 6 attacks using this boost. Alternatively, a there is a non powered melee weapon available to armored characters, the Armor Melee weapon, that still allows the wielder to hit multiple targets and costs much less rep to obtain.
With melee being somewhat of a focus, I would try to get an Athletics score of 3. With the negative modifiers, this will effectively be a 2 during gameplay. Good stats for this build might be Ath 3, Pre 1, Ins 2, Awa 1.5, Kno 2, and Com 2.5.
For Knowledge skills, I would put 5 points into Armorer to pickup some extra mobility and close combat options. 3 points would go into Engineering to get the Emergency Power skill. 1 point into Repair for some extra healing in between scenarios, and 1 point into Survival in case things get messy.
